The TV menu is in another language. Where to start without reading the characters

A foreign menu language is found by the gear, a globe, and the word Language. A translation camera helps with one line. A full reset is not the first step. Do not press it at once.

You turn the TV on, and the menu is in characters or in a language you do not read. The film may be playing, but changing the input, the sound, or Wi-Fi is already scary: one wrong line, and it becomes even less clear.

There is no shared path for Samsung, LG, and Android TV. Do not look for someone else’s screenshot with line numbers. Look for icons and short Latin words that are often left even in a foreign menu: Language, Settings, English. Phone help does not draw these screens.

What is going on

The menu language is a separate setting from the film language and from subtitles. Someone in the house may have switched it from the remote, a child tapped through the first-start wizard, or after a reset the TV asked for a country and a language and the confirm button was pressed without looking. The channel picture is still alive.

In the menu the language is usually hidden in the section with a gear. A gear, sliders, or a house are things you can recognize without reading. Further inside there is sometimes a globe or the line Language. On some models the word Language is written in Latin even when the rest of the text is in another language. On others everything is translated, and then the order of the icons saves you, not reading.

The remote hints too. A button with a house returns to the home screen, back is an arrow or a bent arc. A button with a gear or the word Settings opens settings even if you do not understand the label. Do not hold the color buttons for a long time for a service mode. There is no secret that honestly returns the language on every brand.

A phone camera with translation from a picture sometimes reads the large lines of the menu. That is a hint, not a magic button. Small type and glare on the screen confuse it. Aim, read one word, take a step, check again. Do not confirm a line that the translation showed as reset, network, or delete.

A full TV reset returns the wizard language, but it erases inputs, app accounts, and tuned channels. That is the last step, when the settings icons cannot be found and translation does not help. Before that, go out to the home screen and try the gear. I would not reset a TV only because of the language if the films still open.

What is easy to mix up

The language of one track in the player changes the letters in the film, and the remote menu stays as it was. If the characters are only on the subtitles, take the text track off and do not touch the whole TV. If the characters are in the settings and the film is in Russian, the matter is the system language.

A box and a TV show different menus. You opened the box settings with its own remote, and the TV has nothing to do with it. Press input on the TV remote and see whose screen is in front of you: the frame of a TV app or the box screen. Change the language where it broke.

If English is not in the language list, do not scroll at random down to a factory reset. First set a language whose name you can recognize, if such a line is clear. In a readable language it is easier to find the same section and from there pick your language if it is hidden lower. Ukrainian and Russian in the list sometimes sit next to each other, sometimes at the end, after a long tail. A translation camera is useful here: you need one word in the list, not the whole agreement.

A remote with characters on the buttons still sends the same commands if it is a remote of your brand. A neighbor’s remote of the same brand can open your menu, but it does not fix the language by itself. Do not look for a service code in comments. A code promised for every TV at once more often opens not the language, but a random service screen that you cannot leave without reading.

What to check in order

  1. Press home on the TV remote. Remember, that is the TV screen, not the box. If the remote is someone else’s, first find yours by the marking.
  2. Open settings with the gear button or through the gear icon on the home screen. Do not scroll everything in a row.
  3. Look for a globe, the word Language, or an icon that looks like a card with letters. On Samsung, LG, and Android TV the place differs: somewhere in general, somewhere in system, somewhere almost at the end of the list.
  4. If you cannot read the text, aim the translation camera at one line. Check that the translation does not talk about a reset and not about deleting an account.
  5. In the language list choose the language you read in. Confirm the button that the translation makes look like OK, and immediately check whether the screen changed.
  6. If the system language is already yours and the foreign letters are only in the film, open the player and take the subtitles off or change the track. That is not the menu language.
  7. Check the box menu separately, with its remote. A foreign language there is not fixed by a TV setting.
  8. Move to a full reset only when settings do not open with any icon. Before that, remember which apps you will have to sign in to again.

Where people usually go wrong

  • They press reset to factory settings as the first line, because they recognized the word Reset and not Language.
  • They change the subtitle language and think the menu is already translated.
  • They scroll the box menu, although the characters are on the TV itself.
  • They believe in a shared remote code for every brand. There is no such code.
  • They confirm an unfamiliar line because the translation camera missed by one letter.

Do not confirm a line whose translation contains reset, delete, or network until you have read it a second time. The language is found by the globe and the word Language, not through a full reset.

What to do today

Open the TV settings with the gear icon, find the globe or the word Language, and set the language you read in. Keep the translation camera as a hint for one line, not as an order to press everything in a row. Check subtitles and the box menu separately if after the language change the film is still in foreign letters. Leave a full reset for later, and only if the settings icon cannot be found.
