The TV has a microphone. How to turn it off

Woman in a beige sweater stands in a living room, reaching toward a dot on a large wall-mounted TV with a soundbar below it.
Turn the TV microphone off in the voice item, or with the slider on the frame if it exists. Do not tape the speaker. This item does not turn off the phone microphone.

There is a microphone hole on the TV frame, or a microphone icon sticks out in the menu. It is unpleasant to think the TV hears the room even when you are simply watching a film. You can turn this off if you find voice control, not if you tape every opening at random.

Not every model has a physical key. Somewhere there is a slider on the body, somewhere only a menu item, somewhere the microphone lives in the remote, not in the TV. Samsung, LG, and Android TV label this differently. Look for the words microphone, voice, assistant. The phone help page does not repeat these items.

What is happening

The microphone is there so the TV hears a command without the remote, or so a remote with a microphone sends a phrase. While voice control is off, the hole on the frame can remain, but the TV should not listen to the room. A remote with a microphone button is a separate story: the button is pressed, the phrase goes, the button is released.

The item more often sits in support, system, or voice control. It may be called “voice”, “microphone”, “wake with a word”, or the assistant’s name. Do not look for one and the same line “Settings, General, Microphone” from someone else’s photo. If the line is missing, the model may not give a separate switch, and then the slider on the body remains, if it exists.

The slider on the frame physically cuts the TV microphone. Its position matters more than the menu: the menu can say “on” while the slider has already closed the hardware. Look at the end and the lower edge. The label can be tiny. No slider – do not drill a hole and do not tape the speaker grille. It is easy to mix it up with the microphone.

Apps on the TV can also ask for the microphone if you enter a video chat or voice search. That is permission for one app, not the TV’s general switch. You refuse the app, and the cinema keeps playing. The permission list looks different on different systems. Look for the word microphone inside the app card.

The phone microphone has nothing to do with the TV. You turned voice off on the TV, and the phone still hears the messenger as before. The other way too: a ban on a phone app does not mute the TV frame. Two switches, two devices.

What turning it off does not break

Ordinary remote buttons, volume, and channel change do not depend on the microphone. Voice typing and phrase search will go. If you do not use that button, there is no loss. A soundbar and Bluetooth headphones do not replace the TV microphone and do not turn it back on.

A system update sometimes offers to turn the assistant on again. After an update, look in the same section and check the slider on the body. Taping the grille for good is not needed: tape lands on the light sensor or the remote receiver, and you are then fixing a different trouble.

A microphone icon in the corner during a command is a normal hint that the button on the remote is listening now. It should go out when you release the button. If the icon stays on for the whole film with no button, voice wake is still on. Go back to the voice section and remove the wake phrase. No such icon and no slider – do not assume the TV is recording the room. On many models there is simply no microphone in the frame, and the hole turns out to be a light sensor.

A remote with a microphone feeds the phrase with its own microphone. You turned off the TV frame, and the button on the remote can keep listening while it is held. That is a short press, not a round-the-clock recording. If you want quiet here too, do not press the button with a microphone drawing. That button may have no separate “off forever”, and that is not a reason to open the remote.

Voice search inside one app is not the same as the system microphone. A cinema can ask for voice in its own search line and still not listen to the room on pause. Close the search when the experiment is over. Deleting the app because of one line is not worth it.

A kids profile on the TV sometimes turns voice on separately from the adult one. You turned the microphone off in your menu, and the slider stayed on the child’s profile. Enter the profile used at home and check voice again. A shared switch on the frame, if it exists, closes the hardware for every profile at once.

What to check, in order

  1. Look over the TV frame and the remote. Look for a slider labeled about the microphone. If it is there, move it to off and see whether the icon on the screen went out.
  2. Open settings and find a section by the meaning “voice” or “assistant”. Turn off wake-by-word and the microphone if those lines exist.
  3. Do not copy a path from another brand. No line – look at the voice app’s card in the app list. The word may live there.
  4. Open permissions for apps you installed yourself for calls and the camera. Remove microphone access from those that do not need it for films.
  5. Do not hold the microphone button on the remote. While a finger is on it, the remote listens on purpose. That is not a background recording of the whole evening.
  6. After a TV update, repeat the check. The first-run wizard likes to ask about voice again.
  7. Do not touch the phone in this list if the task is only the TV. Its microphone is turned off in the phone’s app permissions, separately.
  8. Do not open the frame to “pull the microphone out”. The slider and the menu item are made for this.

Where people usually go wrong

  • They tape the speaker or the remote window and lose sound or control.
  • They turn the microphone off on the phone and think the TV is already quiet.
  • They look for one menu item on Samsung, LG, and Android TV.
  • They delete the cinema app, although the assistant asked for the microphone.
  • They leave a finger on the remote’s microphone button and think the TV is listening by itself.

No separate key on the body is normal. Look for the voice item by meaning. Do not tape the speaker grille or the remote window. The phone microphone is not turned off by this item.

What to do today

Find the slider on the frame, if it exists, and turn voice off in settings by the words “microphone” or “assistant”. Remove access from apps you did not allow to talk to the room. After the next update, check the same screen again. Do not mix up the phone and the TV: each has its own switch.

The microphone of apps on the phone is turned off in a different place: extra permissions on Android.
