How to make a separate Wi-Fi for guests and not give away your password

Two people exchange a smartphone in a bright living space; a white wireless router sits on a wooden shelf nearby.
Guest Wi-Fi is a separate name and password in the router, not in Windows. The page address is on the sticker. The Wi-Fi password and the admin password are different things.

A guest asks for the Wi-Fi password, and you do not want to give yours away. Later that password stays on someone else’s phone, and the router can no longer tell your own people from random ones. A separate network for guests is exactly for this: a different name and a different password.

This is done in the router, not in Windows and not in the TV settings. A guest network is not on every model. Look for the word about a guest. The router page address is written on the sticker, often it is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, but not every box has the same one.

What is going on

A router has two different passwords. One is for Wi-Fi, the phone and the TV enter it. The second is for entering the router settings, the page in the browser asks for it. On the sticker they often sit next to each other and are labeled differently. The guest password is a third one, if you set it. It does not replace the administrator password and it does not change the password of your main network.

A guest network is a separate name, it is visible in the Wi-Fi list next to yours. A guest connects to it and goes out to the internet. You do not tell them your password. Your own phones can stay on the old name, you will not have to enter them again if you did not rename the main network.

On some routers guests can be kept away from the printer, the disks, and the TV in the house. The item sounds like access to the local network, isolation, or something similar. There is no shared name. If the switch exists and you want the guest only to open sites, leave the home devices closed. If the item does not exist, the guest network is still useful: the password is different, and it can be changed after the visit without touching your TVs.

The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands the router may show as two names or as one. 2.4 GHz reaches farther and slower, 5 GHz is faster and worse through walls. A TV often sees only 2.4 GHz. A guest in a far room may also need 2.4 specifically. Do not promise a guest 5 GHz speed through two walls.

The router page is opened like this: the phone or the computer is already on your network, and in the browser you type the address from the sticker. Then the login and the administrator password, not the Wi-Fi password. If the sticker is worn off, the address is sometimes written on the bottom or in the short instructions from the box. Do not download a program for entering any router.

What a guest network does not do

It does not hide you from the provider and it does not replace the password on the computer. It is not turned on by a check mark in Windows. If in Windows Settings you see only a list of networks, that is a list for connecting, not the place where a guest network is created. It is created where the router lives.

You can turn the guest network off later with the same item. Other people’s phones that are already connected drop off when the password changes or the network disappears from the air. Your devices on the main name are not touched. The WPS button has nothing to do with this: it looks for new devices by a press, it does not hand out a guest password.

The guest network name is better made recognizable to you and boring to other people’s eyes: not the apartment address and not a surname. The password can be short for the visit, if in the evening you change it. Writing it on a slip for the guest is fine. Hanging that same slip on the door is not. Do not copy the main password onto that slip, even just in case.

If the router shows two guest bands, 2.4 and 5, any one the guest’s phone can see in the same room will do. For a laptop through a wall, 2.4 GHz is more often the livelier one. Do not turn the main network off while you test the guest one. Otherwise the TV drops in the middle of the check, and it feels as if you broke the house for the sake of one password.

What to check in order

  1. Find the router sticker. Write down the page address and, separately, the label of the administrator password. Do not mix it up with the Wi-Fi password.
  2. Connect to your network and open that address in the browser. If the page did not open, check the other typical address, 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, only as a spare, not as the only rule.
  3. Sign in with the administrator password. If it was changed and forgotten, that is already a router reset with the button, not the topic of a guest network. After a reset you will have to enter your own Wi-Fi passwords again.
  4. Find the wireless section and the word about a guest. If there is no such word, this model may have no guest network. Do not install a random firmware.
  5. Turn the guest network on, set your own name so it is not confused with the main one, and a separate password. Do not copy the password from the main network.
  6. If there is an item for access to your devices or the local network, close it when the guest only needs the internet.
  7. From the guest’s phone connect to the new name. Do not switch your TV, it should stay on the old name.
  8. After the guest leaves, change only the guest password or turn the guest network off. The main password does not need to change because of that.

Where people usually go wrong

  • They look for guest Wi-Fi in Windows Settings. It is not created there.
  • They enter the Wi-Fi password instead of the administrator password and think the router is broken.
  • They think every router has the same address. Look at the sticker.
  • They change the name of the main network and then enter the password again on every TV, although they only wanted to let a guest in.
  • They leave the guest password written forever on the fridge together with the administrator password.

The Wi-Fi password and the password for the router page are different. A guest network is created in the router with a separate name. Windows has no such item, and not every router has it.

What to do today

Open the router page at the address from the sticker, sign in with the administrator password, and turn on the guest network with a new name and a new password. Do not rename the main name, let the TV sit on it. If there is no item about a guest, do not look for it on the computer: either the model cannot do it, or the word in the menu is different, look at the wireless section again. After the visit, change only the guest password.
